OpenAI and Microsoft did not break up. They changed the rules that gave Microsoft much stronger control over where OpenAI products could be sold and run. In OpenAI’s official announcement and Microsoft’s matching official post, Microsoft remains OpenAI’s primary cloud partner, but OpenAI can now serve all of its products to customers through any cloud provider.
That is a major shift, but it is not a clean exit from Azure. OpenAI products still ship first on Azure unless Microsoft cannot or chooses not to support the required capabilities. Microsoft also keeps a license to OpenAI models and products through 2032, but that license is now non-exclusive. Put simply: Microsoft no longer holds the only key, but it is still standing very close to the door.
The money matters as much as the infrastructure. Microsoft will no longer pay revenue share to OpenAI, while OpenAI’s payments to Microsoft continue through 2030 at the same percentage and under a total cap, according to the official announcement. Read plainly, Microsoft gives up some exclusive control but keeps a tollbooth on OpenAI’s growth.
For customers, the practical effect is less channel lock-in. An enterprise team already running on AWS does not necessarily have to bend its AI architecture around Azure just because it wants OpenAI models. Still, the agreement does not make every cloud equal. Azure remains first in line and remains the strategic base of the relationship.

WHY AWS MATTERS IMMEDIATELY
One day after the amended Microsoft deal, AWS announced that Amazon Bedrock is getting three OpenAI offerings in limited preview: the latest OpenAI models, Codex, and Amazon Bedrock Managed Agents powered by OpenAI. OpenAI’s AWS post frames the move as a way for enterprise users to work with OpenAI inside the security, compliance, and procurement processes they already use on AWS.
That is more important than another logo on a model marketplace. Bedrock already gives customers a layer for model access, orchestration, security controls, and cost governance. If OpenAI models enter that workflow, developers can choose the model without rebuilding the whole infrastructure stack. For Codex, the fit is especially practical: teams that already build on AWS can bring a coding agent closer to their repositories, identities, and cloud rules.
The main risk is over-romanticizing the deal. This is not the moment OpenAI becomes fully independent of Microsoft. It is better understood as a controlled move from exclusive marriage to multi-channel distribution with long contractual tails. Microsoft gets predictability and participation in OpenAI’s growth. OpenAI gets more routes to market and more negotiating room. AWS gets what it wanted most: OpenAI products inside Bedrock.
The customer takeaway is simple. More choice is good, but the hierarchy did not vanish. Azure stays first in line, Microsoft’s license runs through 2032, and AWS enters through a preview that still has to prove what production deployment will look like. The real change is not that OpenAI left Microsoft. It is that the most important AI models are increasingly being sold like inventory in a cloud supermarket.
